Dr. Peter Senior is a Professor of Medicine, Division Director for Endocrinology and Medical Director of the Clinical Islet Transplant Program at the University of Alberta. His clinical practice focuses on Type 1 diabetes and has a large T1DM practice (>500 patients).
Dr. Senior is an international leader in Type 1 diabetes and since 2003 has pioneered the assessment and management of people with Type 1 diabetes undergoing islet transplantation at the world’s largest clinical islet transplant program. Consequently he has been a leader in the islet transplant community participating in multicentre Clicnial Islet Transplant trials, as a member of the Collaborative Islet Transplant Registry, and has served on the scientific program planning committee of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association.
His research focus has been on phase 1-3 clinical trials in islet transplantation and in type 1 diabetes (new insulins, adjunctive therapies in type 1 diabetes, treatments for diabetes complications, as well as immunotherapies to reverse new onset diabetes, and stem cell derived beta cell replacement). These have been as a local principal investigator or as a member of international consortia (eg PERL – Preventing Early Renal Loss in Type 1 Diabetes funded by NIDDK). A unique research contribution has been in the development of the BETA-2 score as an integrated tool to assess islet transplant outcomes, which has been adopted internationally in the islet transplant community.
In addition he is the past chair of the Diabetes Canada Professional Section Executive, chair of the Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines, and a member of the board of directors. He is a co-investigator in Diabetes Action Canada (a national patient oriented research network) where he leads the Type 1 Diabetes Goal Group.
